Interior Architect

about me

01

My name is Makayla McGee, I'm a 4th year Interior Architecture student studying at Columbia College Chicago; focusing on commerical design, graduating May 2024.

Ive dedicated my time researching and learning the craft of interior architecture in between my college courses.

02

outlook on design

Interior Architecture is a form of art that expresses a pipeline of orientation on how we want the world to look. Design solutions are a visual perception of how we should improve our lives and reflect our world through the diverse voices that inhabit it. When something is designed for everyone, it's designed for no one. So it's our job as designers to train our brains differently, turn the problem over and design holistically.

EXHIBITION INSTALLATION

housing segregation

concept

After centuries of disenfranchisment and race based atrocities, the built environment has been compromised. Reconstructions examines the intersection of anti racism within urban spaces.

The concept of the exhibition space is to reimagine architecture and the built environment, by creating pathways to examine the comprimise and causes of segregation.

Addressing the intersectionality of concentrated poverty and wealth, the triangular floor plan symbolizes the unity and balance of a city. However, it is cut into two, revealing the cause of redlining and its effects on Chicago.

As the triangle is cut, one side remains in unity while the other suffers from disparities and more barriers than the other. This pavilion reflects on these adopted racially restrictive covenants and atrocities African American and other minorities experience in Chicago's stifling role in housing discrimination.

Reveals two paths, one of which is a clear path, and the other revealing the rippling effects the FHA had on the economy as a result of redlining.

Each way you turn you are experiencing each policy that took place leading up to the housing crisis.
